A recent Canadian study concluded that ozone use in drinking water treatment facilities effectively treats cannabis.

With the legalization of cannabis across Canada, municipal water treatment facilities are concerned about their ability to remove the active ingredients in cannabis. They need to remove them from drinking water as well as prevent them from entering surrounding waterways in the effluent water.

The active ingredients tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) were monitored in drinking water plants on the Grand River and Lake Ontario. The study found that ozone can efficiently degrade THC and CBD. “When ozonation is used in the treatment process it is unlikely that these active ingredients will reach treated drinking water”, states Sigrid Peldszus, Research Associate Professor, Faculty of Engineering, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, University of Waterloo, Canada.
