SETTING NEW STANDARDS FOR QUALITY
CannTx Life Sciences is a privately owned Canadian cannabis producer whose mission is to “set new standards of quality for medicinal and recreational cannabis products through a distinct blend of science, technology and innovation.”
Licensed by Health Canada, CannTx boasts a successful agri-business operation near Guelph, Ontario that uses the latest evidence-based technology to produce commercial-grade cannabis in an indoor, hydroponic environment. In addition to the production of quality cannabis products, CannTx has two other important company divisions: Propagation Plants and Horticultural Consulting. CannTx Director and Co-Founder, Buck Young is an internationally respected industry speaker at Cannabis conferences on the topic of quality production practices.

When producing commercial cannabis, whether, for medical or recreational use, it is critically important that the growing process ensures that the end product is of the highest quality and safe for consumption.
Growing plants in an indoor, hydroponic environment can present certain challenges. A common problem is a build-up of mold, algae and other micro-organisms – called biofilm – that can accumulate on surfaces like pipes and water tanks and ultimately harm the plants. In keeping with its embrace of the latest technology, CannTx looked to Aclarus for a way to prevent this problem from occurring in its operation.
The company contacted Aclarus in February 2020 about its water storage system and spoke to the experts about how to protect against the buildup of biofilm. Ultimately, CannTx was looking for a solution that worked to protect the plants without the use of chemicals, was economical, did not disrupt the growing process, and was easy to install and operate.
THE ACLARUS SOLUTION
Aclarus has worked in cannabis facilities across Canada, installing water, wastewater and sanitation systems that use ozone to clean the water. Given the critical nature of water for hydroponic growing, the Aclarus systems offer environmentally sustainable, automated and chemical-free solutions. When a calibrated “dose” of ozone is dissolved in water, it not only eliminates the bio-film and mold, but also promotes plant health and growth.
When CannTX called, Aclarus worked with the company to determine the rate of water flow through the pipes, the treatment required and ultimately the required ozone “dose” and system design that was necessary for success.
The Aclarus system – which was installed in April 2020 – was set up to treat and recirculate water through two 3,000-gallon storage tanks at more than 100 gallons per minute. The ozone system treats the stored water and maintains an automated level of ozone that constantly treats the water in the tank to maintain consistent quality. As part of the system, inline monitors track the dosage and send an alert if something is amiss.
CannTX also had space considerations, so Aclarus designed a custom skid to mount the entire system. This allowed for easy integration and set-up, simply connecting the system between the pump and the tanks, treating it and returning it to the tank on a continual basis.

I think ozone is essential.
You can’t grow quality cannabis without effectively treating the source water.

THE BENEFITS
There is no use of chemicals that could remain in the pipes and tanks or create chemical by-products that must be dealt with.
There is no need to purchase/store expensive chemicals. At about 5 cents per 1000 litres of water treated, it is significantly less than other treatments.
Removes micro-organisms more effectively than other treatments and helps improve the quality of the wastewater produced.
Flushing water pipes and tanks with chemicals can only be done when not growing plants.
The system was easily installed, easy to use, automated, takes up little room and is modular for easy maintenance and service.
