Ozone Benefits for Water Tanks, Wells and Cisterns

Ozone offers a superior, cost-effective solution for the treatment of water stored in tanks, wells and cisterns.

Municipalities and industries have used ozone for water and wastewater treatment for more than 100 years. In recent years, advanced technology has made ozone cost effective for smaller applications such as the treatment of stored water. Ozone is now the fastest growing technology in the global water disinfection sector.

The growth of environmentally friendly ozone technology has been propelled for number of reasons including the fact that the ozone is now universally recognized as a more powerful disinfectant than chlorine. Furthermore, chlorine requires chemical purchase, storage and dosing and has residual by-products such as carcinogenic Trihalomethanes (THMs). The EPA and other global regulators are now imposing strict guide lines on THM levels in municipal water treatment.

Ozone in the treatment train has the ability to effectively remedy common stored water issues such as bacteria, removal of biofilm, algae, and mold etc. It also reduces scale formation and neutralizes PH.  Ozone kills viruses and bacteria on contact, and precipitates heavy metals including iron, lead, sulfur and manganese.

The use of ozone for stored water treatment not only saves water through reuse, but it can also help save on maintenance costs by extending the life of mechanical equipment and pipes.

Ozone is generated on-site and treats automatically, allowing it to integrate into any location without a dedicated operator. For tanks and cisterns, the system will treat and return a portion of the stored water until the entire tank has been treated. It is then maintained with low levels of ozone recirculated and monitored for optimal treatment.

Iron clogged water pipe

This will disinfect and prevent biofilm build-up and other impurities that can be detrimental to the system mechanics. For example, iron build up from iron bacteria, resistant to chemicals, can clog pipes and eventually result in costly replacement. Ozone in the treatment train prevents this build up and keeps pipes residue free.

Ozone treats aesthetics such as colour and odour, without residual chemicals and leaving dissolved oxygen as its only by-product. Ozone enables stored water to be used on-demand for drinking water but also for non-potable use such as irrigation, water features, toilets, showers and other cleaning needs. Systems work without an operator, constant maintenance or complex chemistry.

A properly designed ozone system is a sustainable solution that does not require the use of consumables. This is a very important environmental benefit as well as economical, given recent supply chain issues that have increased costs and restricted global access to chemicals and other consumables. Ozone destroys bacteria and viruses without chemicals. Furthermore ozone removes iron, manganese, sulfur and other organic particular through a process known as micro-flocculation, also without the use of chemicals.
