What is an ORP (Oxidation-reduction potential) reading and how is it measured?

Oxidative Reduction is used in water and wastewater treatment, essentially to determine the level of disinfection in the water in real time. Using a handheld or in-line probe, ORP is measured in millivolts (mV) to determine how strong an oxidant like ozone or peroxide is in the water in real time (think measuring the charge of the oxidants in the water).

ORP should be measured after the contact time required for disinfection to ensure an oxidant is still above the required level following treatment and is disinfecting properly. If the contaminated water has consumed all of the oxidant you get a low ORP reading meaning inadequate treatment (bad).  If the process has not consumed all the oxidant then the ORP will be high, indicating complete disinfection (good).

Typically ORP levels above 600 mV indicates disinfection; readings from 800mV to 1000mV+ means the water is strong enough to disinfect something else.
