SETTING NEW STANDARDS FOR QUALITY

Central Smith was founded in 1896 as a farmer’s co-operative which produced quality cheese and butter from the milk supplied by local dairy farmers. In 1952 Central Smith began exclusive production of premium ice cream.

Over the past 125 years, Central Smith has expanded its product line and now produces a wide variety of premium products for private label brands, ice cream parlours, restaurants and institutional food distributers. Products include sherbets, frozen yogurts, dietetic ice cream and many other frozen dairy and non-dairy desserts. They also work with clients to create and develop innovative new products. Central Smith has built a vast distribution network to deliver their products to clients across North America.

Central Smith places great emphasis on building solid business partnerships by consistently delivering high quality products. Central Smith is a BRC mandated facility with a Safe Quality Food Gold level certification. “We ensure all products not only meet but exceed the highest quality and safety standards”, states Ian Scates, President, Central Smith. “Everything we do uses water ..alot of water. Premium water quality is vital to our business success.”

Central Smith was seeking a better solution to treat challenging well water contaminants. The well water is used for every aspect of their business from ice cream production, packaging, equipment cleaning, the cooling tower, as well as the kitchen and bathroom facilities.

Water treatment had been an ongoing challenge for decades. “The hard well water was hard on the equipment due to the constant clogging, and also made cleaning and sanitizing difficult. Everything was a challenge.” says Ian Scates.

The high iron content resulted in stains and residue on equipment resulting in maintenance issues and reduced equipment lifespan. The well water contaminants were also leading to excessive use of chemicals, soaps and other cleaners. Central Smith needed a comprehensive treatment solution that could provide superior water disinfection, oxidation and aesthetics.

THE ACLARUS SOLUTION

Aclarus worked with Central Smith to determine key factors like the water quality, the treatment required and ultimately the required ozone “dose” and system design that was necessary for success.

The Aclarus Ozone system resulted in greatly enhanced water quality, while at the same time reduced the quantity of cleaning soap /agents and chemicals required previously. Furthermore, the equipment staining and residual build-up issues were rectified. Maintenance on the equipment pipes and clogged machinery has been significantly reduced and, in some cases, completely irradicated.

One of the most notable benefits was on the cooling tower/condenser. Prior to ozone, the cooling tower had to be routinely cleaned to remove the build-up of biofilm and background bacteria. This residue reduced the lifespan of the cooling tower and resulted in replacement every five years or so. Since ozone was introduced in 2018 the tower is virtually spotless with no residue build-up.

“I wish I had known about the benefits of ozone 40 years ago when I began my career at Central Smith!” states Central Smith President, Ian Scates.

Process Water System; 20gr/hr ozone generator, oxygen generator, control panel, super saturation injection and mixing system with de-gas removal, contact tank with vacuum break, flow switch activation, ambient alarm, Teflon tubing. Automatic backwashing sediment filter (captures ozonated materials), automatic backwashing carbon filter (final polish filter and converts ozone to oxygen); optional CIP sanitation line option with manual ozone dose control.

Facility Treatment System; 4gr/hr ozone generator, automatic air dryer, injection and mixing system, contact tank with vacuum break, flow switch activation, Teflon tubing. Automatic backwashing sediment filter, automatic backwashing carbon filter.

Everyone with a cooling tower should use ozone.

The Aclarus ozone solution has completely eliminated any biofilm and bacteria buildup, reduced our maintenance costs and extended the life of our equipment.

THE BENEFITS

There is no need to purchase, transport, store and handle chlorine or other potentially harmful chemicals.

Reduced monthly costs because there is less need to purchase/store expensive chemicals; costs about 5 cents per 1000 litres of water treated, significantly less than other treatments.

Completely disinfects the water; removes colour; removes harmful metals, microplastics and other micro-organisms more effectively than other treatments.

There are no chemical residuals or by-products; increased dissolved oxygen in the water improves the health of aquatic species.

The treated wastewater meets or exceeds all environmental regulations.

The system was easily retrofitted and installed into the existing building to help keep infrastructure costs low. The system is easy to use, takes up little room and is modular for easy expansion or service.
